SpicyChat won its audience with a free tier, a huge library of community characters and fewer filters than mainstream chatbots. Then on 8 September 2026 it raised every paid tier, the middle one by a third, and plenty of users started asking what the free tier was really costing them.
This page treats "free" as a bill paid in waiting, memory and features, works out that bill for SpicyChat, then matches each reason for leaving with an app that fixes it. Downsides come first for every pick.
What SpicyChat's free tier really charges you
SpicyChat's help centre is unusually open about its limits:
- Waiting. Its support article says queues "apply to free accounts during periods of heavy traffic"; subscribing removes them.
- Short memory. Free accounts and the entry tier both get a 4,096-token context window, the amount of conversation the model can see at once. Long roleplays outgrow it fast. 8,192 tokens takes True Supporter; I'm All In gets 16,384.
- Short replies. Free and Get A Taste replies are capped at 180 tokens, against 300 on the two upper tiers.
- Ads. The plan comparison lists "No Ads" and "Skip The Waiting Lines" among the paid perks.
- No pictures in chat, no voice. Conversation Images start at True Supporter, and text-to-speech is reserved for I'm All In.
SpicyChat also states plainly that there are no free trials of its paid plans.
What the paid tiers cost now. Per SpicyChat's September 2026 pricing FAQ: Get A Taste $5.95 a month or $60 a year, True Supporter $19.95 or $199.95, I'm All In $29.95 or $299.95. Existing recurring plans keep their old price while left unchanged. Note that most of what people upgrade for (memory, longer replies, images) starts at $19.95, not $5.95.
Why people go looking for a SpicyChat alternative
Going by the help centre and recurring public complaints, four reasons dominate:
- The free tier feels slow. Queues at busy times, ads and clipped replies.
- Characters forget. A 4K window loses the thread of a long story, and the fix costs $19.95 a month.
- You want images or voice. Both are locked behind the two pricier tiers.
- The price rise. People who were happy at the old $14.95 are now comparing the new $19.95 against the rest of the market.
Also note: in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and several US states, SpicyChat now requires a third-party selfie or ID check before showing NSFW-tagged characters. That comes from local law covering adult platforms generally, so expect similar checks elsewhere rather than switching just to avoid one.
If waiting and ads are why you're leaving
Kupid AI
What to weigh first. This is the riskiest pick on billing. Kupid's terms treat every digital purchase as final. Reviewers also warn that checkout tends to default to weekly billing, a far pricier route over twelve months than paying yearly. Its plan table lists Pro at $12.99 a week or $179 a year with no monthly option, and its recall only covers recent messages, with nothing you can edit.
Why it fits. The free-chat promise is the headline: on 5 October 2026 Kupid's homepage read "Sign up and get Unlimited Chat for Free". Treat that as marketing: the plan table also ranks queue priority by tier (standard on free, high on Pro, highest on Ultra), so paying is what shortens waits here too. Paid plans centre on voice notes, which reviewers rate highly, and companions who message you first. Ourdream AI
What to weigh first. Ourdream isn't a free option: the official help pages charge non-subscribers a coin for every message and rule out free coin handouts. Membership runs $19.99 monthly or $119.88 billed yearly, roughly True Supporter money. Users often report failed video clips, and refunds are strict.
Why it fits. Memory is what its users praise most. An automatic memory log updates roughly every 20 AI messages, next to a pinned-memory box you write yourself (reportedly 15,000 characters). Standard-model chat costs members nothing extra, and the published price list covers media, such as 5 coins per in-chat image, from a monthly 1,000-coin allowance.

If you want images and voice
Candy AI: the visuals pick
What to weigh first. The subscription is the entry fee, not the whole bill. Premium covers unlimited messaging plus a 100-token monthly allowance, and every picture, voice clip or video draws from it. Candy's plan page doesn't say what each item costs; outside estimates of around 4 tokens per standard image suggest the allowance stretches to about 25 pictures. The free option is a short trial, memory lapses top public complaints, and outside the EU and UK refunds need to be within 24 hours with 20 tokens or fewer used.
Why it fits. On SpicyChat, pictures in chat cost at least $19.95 a month and voice $29.95. Candy bundles chat, image generation, voice messages, video and scripted scenes into one subscription at a lower monthly price. Checked on 5 October 2026, the subscriptions page showed an introductory $9.99 month that renews at $13.99, a $26.97 quarter, and an annual plan at $47.88 (works out to $3.99 monthly).

Lovescape
What to weigh first. As a conversation partner, Lovescape trails the field: reviewers mention repetition and drift, and "advanced AI chat memory" is locked to Creative PRO at $359.88 annually. Clips burn through chips (one reviewer counted about 90 for a five-second clip), and checkout prices vary.
Why it fits. It's built for designing a character and generating pictures and clips of them, and image generation is what reviewers rate highest. Costs are easy to forecast: Premium bundles 600 chips monthly (the February 2026 pricing post says $71.88 a year; Aug–Oct 2026 checkout reports say $95.88 a year or $19.99 a month), and chip packs start at 500 for $9.99.

JOI AI
What to weigh first. JOI's plan prices aren't public, so these are third-party reports. Extras run on Neurons; per its terms, opening a photo can cost as much as 120 and a video as much as 1,900. Subscriptions are generally non-refundable, and voice calls are reportedly costly.
Why it fits. Reviewers at checkout in August 2026 saw annual Premium at $47.99, against $199.95 a year for True Supporter. JOI adds creator personas (AI characters licensed by real creators) and a free Basic account, though a limited one: its terms bill romantic or explicit messages in Neurons, and the help centre allows 6 lifetime image generations.

Same logic. Third-party reads of CrushOn's pricing page (September 2026) describe 100 free credits a month for its better models, metered tiers from $5.99 and unlimited premium-model chat as a $39.99 add-on. PolyBuzz, per reviewers, keeps chat free with frequent ads and short memory, with paid plans from $9.90 a month and permanent memory only at $29.90. Tired of credits? - Credits: every message or image draws down a balance, like Ourdream's non-subscriber chat or CrushOn.
- Flat fee plus metered media: text included, media extra, as with Candy and Ourdream subscriptions.
Chat-heavy users usually save with a flat fee; media-heavy users should budget the currency first.
