Disclosure: I earn a commission if you sign up for Candy AI, Ourdream AI, JOI AI, Lovescape or Kupid AI through links on this page; Chai and the other apps named here do not pay me. 18+ only. This guide draws on each app's pricing pages, help docs, terms and labelled public reports, checked October 2026. I have not run long-term first-hand tests, so nothing below is personal experience.
People search for apps like Chai when a favourite bot starts looping the same lines, when a character feels thin, or when free chat turns into a meter of "pieces" and ads. Chai still has a huge library and a free way in, but the deal changed through 2026 — which is when "chai alternatives" and "chai ai alternative" searches spike.
This page starts with what free vs paid looks like on Chai right now, then matches each common reason for leaving with an app that fixes that reason. Downsides come first every time.
What Chai's free tier costs you in 2026
Chai Research runs two products that do not share data: the mobile app and the web product at chai-ai.com. Treat them separately.
On the app. Through 2026 free messaging has been tightened more than once. Public reporting of founder posts from 8 September 2026 describes a move to "pieces": every message costs at least one piece, better models cost more, and free accounts get a daily allowance instead of unlimited chat. Third-party write-ups put that daily check-in around 200–300 pieces (older caps were often near 771). The same reporting says subscriptions still include unlimited standard messages. US App Store figures in those Sept–Oct 2026 summaries list Premium at $13.99/mo or $134.99/yr, Ultra at $29.99/mo or $19.99/wk, and a 200-piece pack at $2.79 — third-party snapshots; your store listing counts.
On the web. Chai's own FAQ (checked October 2026) says the site is free to start, and Chai AI Pro offers a 24-hour trial, $9.99 a week or $159.99 a year, with advanced models, no ads and priority speed. The FAQ also states plainly that the web and app platforms share no data. CHAI MAX is listed as a Pro add-on ($0.66 per 1,000 tokens generated on Auto, or $90 a month).
What users complain about besides the meter. Public threads describe bots repeating, shallow or drifting characters, peak-hour free-tier friction, and ads. Those complaints — not a ranking table — drive the picks below.
Why people look for a Chai alternative
Three reasons dominate the "apps like chai" searches:
- Bots that repeat. Short context and looping replies kill long roleplay.
- Characters that feel thin. A big library is less useful when personalities collapse into the same voice.
- Ads, pieces and paywall friction. Free chat still exists, but it is metered, and paying is what restores unlimited messaging on the app side.
The five apps below are organised by those reasons, not by a generic Top 10.
If repetition is why you're leaving Chai
Ourdream AI
What to weigh first. Ourdream is not a free substitute for Chai's daily pieces. Its help centre says non-subscribers pay one coin per message and that it does not hand out free coins (other Ourdream pages say you get 55 coins at sign-up). Membership is $19.99 a month or $119.88 billed yearly. Video generation draws mixed public reports, and refunds are strict.
Why it fits. Memory is the main reason people leave Chai. Ourdream documents an automatic memory log that regenerates roughly every 20 AI messages, plus pinned memories you write yourself (about 15,000 characters in its guide) — aimed at the "it forgot / it repeated" failure mode. Standard-model chat is included for members; media still costs coins.
Go here if you were burning pieces on Chai just to keep a story coherent, and you'd rather pay for tools that show and edit what the companion remembers. Our Ourdream AI review covers the memory stack; which apps remember what compares the field. Compare Ourdream AI's plans here.
Not affiliated: Nomi also markets long-term memory around one ongoing companion rather than a huge public library.
If shallow characters — and you want looks too — are why you're leaving
Candy AI: the visuals pick
What to weigh first (token caveat). The subscription is only the door fee. Premium covers unlimited messaging plus 100 tokens a month; every picture, voice clip or video spends from that pool. Candy's plan page does not publish per-item token prices; outside estimates (~4 tokens per image) imply roughly 25 pictures from the allowance. Memory complaints top many public analyses, and outside the EU/UK refunds are often limited to a short window. Free access is a short trial, not a Chai-style daily allowance.
Why it fits. Chai's library is text-first for most free users. Candy's pitch is a companion that can look and sound consistent: chat, images, voice and video under one plan. Checked on 5 October 2026, candy.ai/subscriptions showed $9.99 intro → $13.99/mo, $26.97/quarter, and $47.88/yr (~$3.99 monthly). That is the "character + images" slot — better if your Chai frustration is a thin avatar, worse if you only wanted unlimited text.
Go here if you want a character with a face and voice, and you will set a token budget before binge-generating. Token maths sit in our Candy AI review and the GitBook Candy AI write-up; see Candy AI's current pricing. If Candy's tokens later become the new annoyance, Candy AI alternatives by reason for leaving maps the exits.
Lovescape
What to weigh first. Chat quality is not Lovescape's strongest suit in public reviews: repetition and drift show up often, and "advanced AI chat memory" sits on Creative PRO at $359.88/yr (February 2026 pricing post). Short clips can burn chips quickly.
Why it fits. If leaving Chai is about designing a character and generating pictures or clips, Lovescape is built for that studio loop. Premium bundles 600 chips monthly ($71.88/yr in the official post, $95.88/yr in recent checkout reports); packs start at 500 for $9.99, so visual spend is easier to forecast than opaque piece costs.
Go here if creation and visuals are the main event and chat is secondary. Our Lovescape review breaks down chips; try Lovescape's character studio.
If pieces, ads or the paywall are why you're leaving
Kupid AI
What to weigh first. Billing risk is real: Kupid's terms treat digital purchases as final, and reviewers warn checkout often defaults to weekly billing. Its official plan table (Oct 2026) is not unlimited free forever: Free = 15 messages, 30-msg memory, no media; Pro $12.99/wk or $179/yr; Ultra $24.99/wk or $299/yr; lifetime $777; no monthly plan. Queue priority rises with paid tiers. The homepage banner still saying "Unlimited Chat for Free" is marketing; our Kupid free-plan breakdown explains the gap.
Why it fits. For someone tired of Chai's piece meter, a short free sample plus voice notes on paid plans is a different shape of product. Companions that message first and voice-led check-ins are what reviewers highlight, not a giant public bot browser.
Go here if you will treat the 15 free messages as a demo, pick yearly billing on purpose if you subscribe, and care more about voice than a huge library. Read the Kupid AI review before paying; start Kupid AI's free chat.
JOI AI
What to weigh first. Plan prices are not posted before signup; August 2026 checkout reports put annual Premium near $47.99. Extras run on Neurons (terms list up to 120 to open a photo and up to 1,900 for a video). Subscriptions are generally non-refundable.
Why it fits. If Chai Ultra's monthly price is the sticking point and you want creator-linked personas with a free Basic tier for limited, non-adult chat (JOI's terms bill romantic or explicit messages in Neurons) and 6 lifetime image generations, JOI is the price-pressure slot. Public feedback often praises Premium's steadier personality more than raw memory tools.
Go here if cost after Chai's Premium/Ultra jump is the grievance and you will cap Neuron spend. Neuron pricing is itemised in our JOI AI review; open a free JOI AI Basic account.

What comparison charts leave out
Chai's free tier now charges in throughput and currency (pieces, ads, peak limits). Ourdream charges non-subscribers per message. Candy and subscribed Ourdream use a flat fee plus metered media. Kupid's free plan is a short sample, not an all-day substitute for Chai's old unlimited feel.
If "how much can I do without paying?" is the real question, read what each AI girlfriend free tier actually includes. If you came from SpicyChat-style queues rather than Chai's pieces, what "free" costs on SpicyChat-like plans covers that angle.
Picking one
- Bots keep repeating / forgetting → Ourdream AI
- Want character + images (budget tokens) → Candy AI
- Want to design looks and clips → Lovescape
- Tired of pieces; OK with a 15-message demo + voice → Kupid AI
- Chai's Premium/Ultra price is the pain → JOI AI
The cheapest honest test is still the cheapest plan: try the chat, then buy coins, tokens or Neurons only if the writing holds up. All five long-form reviews live on our GitBook companion reviews hub.
FAQ
What are the best apps like Chai right now?
It depends why you're leaving: Ourdream AI for memory, Candy AI for character plus images, Lovescape for visual creation, Kupid AI for a short free sample and voice notes, JOI AI when price after Chai's paid tiers is the issue.
Is there a free Chai AI alternative with unlimited messages?
Not in the old sense. Chai's own app free tier is moving to daily pieces; Kupid's official free plan is 15 messages; JOI and Lovescape keep limited free chat, though JOI's excludes romantic or explicit messages, which cost Neurons under its terms. Treat "unlimited free" marketing as a claim to verify on the plan table.
Why do Chai bots repeat themselves?
Public complaints point to short effective context and uneven load on free tiers. Apps with editable memory logs or pinned facts (Ourdream) are built to reduce that failure mode; none promise perfect recall.
Is Chai's web Pro the same as the app subscription?
No. Chai's FAQ says the web and app share no data, and the price lists differ (web Pro $9.99/week or $159.99/year per the FAQ; app Premium/Ultra figures above are App Store snapshots from third-party reports).
Candy AI or Ourdream if I'm leaving Chai?
Pick Candy if visuals matter and you'll watch tokens; pick Ourdream if remembering the story matters more than pictures. Our Candy alternatives guide helps if you try Candy first and still bounce.
