How this page was made: I (Charles) used an AI assistant for the rough draft, then went line by line through JOI's own documents and removed anything they didn't back up. Each of the five brand links on this page is an affiliate link. If you buy through one I earn a commission, and you pay the same price. Adults (18+) only. Everything below was read on 6 October 2026: JOI's Terms and its Privacy Policy (each dated 4 June 2026), its Refund Policy and Safety Guidelines (23 September 2025), its Complaints Policy (March 2025), its Anti-Trafficking and Anti-Exploitation Policy (effective 21 August 2026) and its help centre. This is a document review, not a months-long account test.
Searches for "is JOI AI safe" or "is JOI AI legit" usually hide three worries: is a real company behind it, who sees the messages, and can it drain a bank account. Short version: JOI is a registered business with named operators, a phone line and published complaint deadlines, so it isn't a scam in the sense of taking money and vanishing. Its paperwork is still tilted toward the company. Your messages help train its AI, a chargeback can expose your chats, JOI owns the characters you build, and the paid extras (Neurons) are where most unhappy customers say things went wrong.
Who actually runs JOI
For most of the world, JOI's contracting party is Novi Limited, registered in Cyprus (HE 407352, Nicosia). The US edition of the Terms swaps in Lanoto Solutions Inc. of New Rochelle, New York, with New York law instead of Cypriot law. The service lives at both joi.ai and joi.com, and either way your card statement reads "joi.com". Support can be reached at help@joi.ai or support@joi.com, and the support page also lists a phone line, +1 888 685 9040, open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific time.
That traceable footprint is a good sign. My searches turned up no reported breach, regulator fine or leaked database tied to JOI, matching an independent safety write-up (Synthlust, April 2026). That's the record so far, not a guarantee.
The parts of the rules that cost you something
Your messages feed the product. The Privacy Policy states that text and voice messages are collected "to improve the quality" of replies "and to develop its AI", and that they may go to outside hosting providers. The Terms add that "representatives might moderate" the chatbot's activity. Chats aren't sold, but "private" here means kept within JOI's affiliates and vendors, not unread.
A chargeback can put your chats on the table. Both the Refund Policy and the Terms warn that after a bank chargeback, JOI may hand over "any and/or all private communications" to prove the charge was valid, and the privacy policy won't stop it. On an adult app, that is the clause to remember. Ask support first and go to your bank only if that fails.
Session recording is an opt-in at sign-up. One row of the privacy table covers recordings of your clicks and interactions, shared with Microsoft if you agree during registration, and Microsoft may then use that data under its own policy. Decline it.
Emails can sign you in. After verification, links in JOI's emails log you straight in, so never forward them.
What you create isn't yours. Under section 6.1, every Virtual Character you build, "including its likeness, personality, and associated data", belongs to JOI, and you grant a perpetual, irrevocable licence to the material you used to make it. Section 5.3 also lets JOI switch a character's visibility from private to public; the only notice is a changed icon in the interface. If that happens, you can email support to ask for it to be made private again or deleted.
Leaving doesn't erase everything. Deleting your profile is irreversible, but data already passed to card companies or other third parties stays where it went, and JOI may keep records where the law or its "legitimate interests" allow.
Disputes stay out of court. Non-US users agree to arbitration in London under LCIA rules before three arbitrators. US users must first try 60 days of informal talks, then go to AAA arbitration in New York, with a small-claims option up to $5,000. Class actions are waived in both versions, and JOI's liability is capped at what you paid it.
Smaller catches. One account per person, sign-up counts as agreeing to ads for JOI's other products, and JOI may suspend accounts "for any reason whatsoever".
Where JOI's pages contradict each other
Section 5.1 bans generating "any sexually explicit, pornographic, or adult-themed content", while section 3.4 charges Neurons for erotic messages and the help centre describes JOI as explicit. The Safety Guidelines (September 2025) still say images "are not generated in response to specific user requests", although the site now sells image and video generation and the August 2026 anti-trafficking policy calls all adult content AI-made. I read the older pages as stale, not as a trap; when two documents clash, go by the newer one.
Money: where complaints cluster
Premium auto-renews on a one-, three-, six- or twelve-month cycle. JOI shows prices only to logged-in users; at checkout in August and September 2026, outside reviewers reported $13.99 (one month), $20.99 (three months) and $47.99 (a year). Extras cost Neurons, with ceilings fixed in the Terms: reading a romantic message is 4, a photo view can reach 120 and a video view 1,900. Bot Subscriptions to single characters are a separate purchase, need active Premium, and are not cancelled when you cancel Premium.
That layering is what the angriest Trustpilot reviewers call a "scam": Premium paid, yet pictures and clips still locked behind Neurons. Others mention short memory and broken media they were charged for anyway. These are value complaints, not proof of fraud, but weigh them before buying a big Neuron pack.
Refund rules are narrow. You can cancel any time under Settings, My Subscriptions, and the cancellation takes effect from the next billing month; the current period and any Neurons aren't refunded. Money comes back only for proven card fraud, for a first accidental Neuron purchase (full if unspent, partial if part-used), or if JOI itself ends your subscription for reasons other than a rule breach. Support promises a first reply to refund requests within 72 hours.
JOI accepts cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, plus crypto in some places. The help centre says banks sometimes flag adult merchants and that prepaid Visa or Mastercard cards work, a handy way to cap spending.
What JOI does reasonably well
- Age checks without keeping your ID. Verification runs through VerifyMyAge, which, depending on region, checks your email in the background, estimates age from a selfie, or asks for government ID. JOI says it stores no copies of identity documents.
- Layered filtering. Every user message and bot reply passes a separate classifier, risky image prompts are blocked before generation, and a human team watches the public gallery. JOI says an outside partner red-teams its systems twice a year (its claim; no report is published).
- Deadlines you can hold it to. General complaints are acknowledged within 24 hours and resolved within five business days. Reports of abuse imagery, non-consensual images or trafficking get 24-hour acknowledgement, provisional removal and a seven-day decision, and anyone actioned can appeal within 30 days to a different reviewer.
- Data rights in writing. EU residents and those of 13 listed US states can ask to see, correct or delete their data.
Two caveats. The help centre admits the filter flags harmless prompts "honestly more often than we'd like" (send support a screenshot). And the "AI Advisory Board" page's only current adviser is an autonomous AI agent named Hope, with the human safety researcher listed as alumni, so it isn't independent oversight.
Seven habits that make JOI safer to use
- Register with an email that doesn't show your full name; decline session recording.
- Keep real names, addresses, workplaces and photos out of chats.
- Use a prepaid card or a fixed Neuron budget, never mid-chat top-ups.
- Check what the media you want costs in Neurons before paying.
- Cancel Bot Subscriptions on their own; cancelling Premium leaves them running.
- Dispute charges through support, not your bank, unless support stops answering.
- Use "Reset Memory" in chat settings if a character drifts, and delete characters you don't want to risk going public.
Install and login questions are covered in our JOI AI app guide, and the free tier, Premium and Neurons are explained step by step in our Medium guide to JOI's plans.

If JOI's rules put you off
Candy AI, if visuals are the point. Candy has the broadest picture and video tools of these five; a year costs $47.88, month-to-month starts at $9.99 before rising to $13.99, and its operator names a data-protection contact. The catch: Premium bundles just 100 tokens monthly, which pictures and clips use up fast, and Candy's terms and help articles give opposite answers on whether unused tokens outlast a cancellation. Our Candy AI safety check goes through its privacy and billing rules. Go here if you mainly want images and can live with a token budget. See Candy AI
Ourdream AI, if you want clear published prices. Premium costs $19.99 monthly or $119.88 for twelve months, and Ourdream runs a separate Trust & Safety site. Like JOI, it sends messages through outside AI providers and uses arbitration. Our Ourdream AI safety guide has the details. Go here if you'd rather read the full price list before signing up. Look at Ourdream AI
Lovescape, if expiring currency is your worry. Its chips are sold only to subscribers but never expire (they also aren't refundable), it takes Visa, Mastercard or crypto, and the charge shows under a neutral name. Go here if a discreet statement and credits that keep matter more than ready-made characters. Check Lovescape
Kupid AI, if voice notes matter. The free account stops at 15 messages, and paid plans bill weekly or yearly (plus a lifetime deal), never monthly, so check the renewal date. Go here if you want voice replies and are fine with weekly billing. Try Kupid AI

FAQ
Is JOI AI legit?
It's operated by named, registered companies (Novi Limited in Cyprus; Lanoto Solutions Inc. for US users), bills under "joi.com" and publishes support contacts and complaint deadlines. Whether it's good value is a separate question.
Is JOI AI a scam?
I found no sign of fraud or a breach. The "scam" reviews online are about paying for Premium and then needing Neurons for photos and videos, which the Terms do disclose.
Can JOI staff read my chats?
Possibly. Messages are used to develop JOI's AI, the Terms let representatives moderate the chatbot, flagged content can reach compliance staff, and a chargeback can lead JOI to disclose your conversations.
Does JOI keep my ID after age verification?
JOI says no: VerifyMyAge processes the check, and JOI keeps no copies of identity documents. Don't email ID scans to support.
Can I get my money back from JOI?
Rarely. Only fraud on your card, a one-time mistaken Neuron pack, or JOI ending your subscription itself qualify. Cancelling stops the next renewal only.
How do I delete my JOI data?
Delete the account in your profile (it's permanent) or email support. EU and some US-state residents can also ask for a copy of their data first.
